Softvisc 10 ml
Product highlights
Description
Softvisc Eye Drops is a sterile ophthalmic lubricant solution available in a 10 ml bottle. Each ml of the solution contains Carboxymethyl Cellulose Sodium 10 mg (1% w/v) as the active ingredient, along with a preservative and sterile aqueous vehicle. The product is strictly for external ophthalmic use only and must not be injected or ingested. It is a gel-based lubricant eye drop, commonly referred to as artificial tears, used to provide long-lasting relief from dryness and irritation of the eyes. The product is packaged in a clean white rectangular box with text in black and green, featuring the brand name “Softvisc” displayed prominently in large bold green font in the center, with a green wavy line graphic below the name, and the composition “Carboxymethyl Cellulose Sodium Eye Drops 1% w/v” and “LUBRICANT EYE DROPS” printed above.
Carboxymethyl Cellulose Sodium at 1% concentration is a chemically modified cellulose compound that dissolves in water to form a thick, gel-like solution. This higher concentration compared to standard 0.5% CMC formulations gives Softvisc its enhanced viscosity and gel-like consistency, providing extra-strength lubrication. Its mechanism of action is based on its ability to bind to the surface of the eye and retain moisture, forming a stable, long-lasting protective film over the corneal and conjunctival surfaces. This gel-like film mimics the lubricating properties of natural tears but with enhanced viscosity, reducing friction between the eyelid and the eye surface, preventing excessive evaporation of the tear film, and protecting the ocular surface from environmental stressors such as wind, dust, smoke, dry air, air conditioning, and prolonged screen exposure. The thick, gel-based formula delivers enhanced lubrication to tired or strained eyes, locking in essential moisture and providing long-lasting relief from discomfort. The increased viscosity also ensures a longer residence time on the ocular surface compared to standard watery artificial tears, meaning fewer reapplications are needed throughout the day.
The primary indications for Softvisc Eye Drops are the treatment of dry eye syndrome, providing relief from burning, itching, irritation, stinging, grittiness, and foreign body sensation caused by inadequate tear production or excessive tear evaporation. It is particularly effective for persistent eye dryness, burning redness, and severe eye strain. The product is also indicated for the temporary relief of burning and irritation due to environmental factors such as wind, sun exposure, heating, air conditioning, and prolonged computer or mobile phone use. It is useful for easing eye strain in individuals experiencing discomfort due to extended screen time or reading. Additionally, it is used to lubricate and re-wet soft and rigid gas permeable contact lenses, easing the discomfort associated with lens wear. It may also be used as a supportive lubricant in the management of superficial corneal abrasions and post-surgical dry eye. The product is suitable for both adults and children, though it should be used under medical supervision in pediatric patients.
The recommended dosage is 1 to 2 drops instilled into the affected eye(s) as often as needed throughout the day, or as directed by an ophthalmologist. The drops can be used multiple times daily depending on the severity of symptoms and individual comfort needs. There is no strict limitation on the number of applications per day, and the frequency can be adjusted based on the degree of dryness experienced. The product is safe for long-term use, making it suitable for chronic dry eye conditions. The gel-like consistency ensures prolonged residence time on the ocular surface, providing sustained relief. If a dose is missed, it should be used as soon as remembered without doubling the next application.
The product is generally very well tolerated and is considered safe for regular and prolonged use. The most common side effects include mild eye burning or irritation immediately after application, temporary blurred vision, eye itching, eye redness, and increased tear production. These effects are usually mild and transient, resolving within a few minutes. Other reported effects include a foreign body sensation, mild eye pain, and sensitivity to light. If any side effect persists for more than 72 hours or worsens, the user should discontinue use and consult a doctor. Severe allergic reactions are rare but may include swelling of the eyelids, severe redness, or intense itching.
Serious but rare side effects include severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing) and persistent or worsening eye pain and changes in vision. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience severe eye pain, sudden vision changes, persistent redness or swelling lasting more than 72 hours, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Important precautions include removing soft contact lenses before instilling the drops and waiting at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the preservative may be absorbed by soft contact lenses. If using other eye medications simultaneously, a gap of at least 5 to 10 minutes should be maintained between different drops. The user should avoid driving or operating machinery until their vision is clear after application, as temporary blurred vision is common. The product should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to carboxymethylcellulose or any of the excipients. The dropper tip should not be touched to the eye or any surface to maintain sterility. The product should not be used if the solution changes color or becomes cloudy.
The product should be stored in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight and kept out of reach of children. The bottle should be tightly closed after each use to prevent contamination. The product is available in India at a price range of approximately 100 to 150 rupees per 10 ml bottle and is available through major online pharmacy platforms and offline pharmacies.
