Product highlights
Description
Renolen Eye Drops is a sterile ophthalmic solution available in a 10 ml bottle. Each drop of the solution contains Potassium Iodide IP 1.35 mg, Sodium Chloride IP 0.035 mg, and Calcium Chloride IP 0.054 mg as the active ingredients, along with Benzalkonium Chloride IP 0.002% w/v as a preservative and Sodium Hydroxide IP q.s. to adjust pH to 7.0-8.0. The product is strictly for external ophthalmic use only and must not be injected or ingested. The bottle should be shaken well before each use. It is a combination of mineral salts used primarily for the management of cataracts and dry eye conditions. The product is packaged in a white rectangular box with a large green panel on the front face, featuring the brand name “RENOLEN” displayed prominently in large green font, with the composition details and volume indication clearly printed.
Renolen Eye Drops contains a carefully balanced combination of three mineral salts that work synergistically to maintain the health and transparency of the eye lens. Potassium Iodide is the primary active agent that acts as an antisclerotic (anti-cataract) agent with antimicrobial and antifungal properties. It helps maintain the osmotic pressure and permeability of the lens membrane by balancing intracellular potassium ions, thereby preventing the clouding of the lens that characterizes cataract formation. Sodium Chloride works by maintaining the extracellular sodium ion balance in the lens membrane, supporting proper osmotic pressure and lens permeability. It also helps reduce swelling of the corneal surface by drawing excess fluid out, thereby reducing corneal edema and associated discomfort. Calcium Chloride reverses calcium depletion in the eye lens that occurs due to ageing, restoring calcium stores and maintaining lens transparency. It also helps in conditions like cataract and corneal edema by ensuring crystal clear vision. Together, these three mineral salts maintain the critical electrolyte balance within the eye lens, which is essential for preserving lens transparency and preventing or slowing the progression of cataracts. The electrolyte imbalance in the lens is a key factor in cataract development, and by restoring and maintaining this balance, Renolen helps delay cataract formation and supports overall eye health.
The primary indications for Renolen Eye Drops are the prevention and management of cataracts (clouding of the lens in the eye), particularly in the early stages where surgery is not yet indicated or when cataract surgery needs to be postponed due to other medical conditions such as uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes mellitus. It is also used to prevent cloudiness after cataract surgery (posterior capsular opacification). Additionally, it is indicated for the management of dry eye syndrome, providing relief from burning, irritation, and discomfort caused by inadequate tear production. It is also used for eye irritation and as a supportive treatment in conditions where electrolyte imbalance affects ocular health. The product is intended for use in adults and should be used under the supervision of a qualified ophthalmologist.
The recommended dosage is 1 to 2 drops instilled into the affected eye(s) every 3 to 4 hours, or as directed by a physician. The exact dosage and frequency may vary depending on the severity of the condition and the doctor’s instructions. It is important to use the drops consistently at the same intervals throughout the day for optimal electrolyte maintenance. If a dose is missed, it should be instilled as soon as remembered, but if the next instillation is more than 4 hours later, the missed dose should be skipped. The product should be used within one month (4 weeks) after opening the bottle.
The product is generally very well tolerated with an excellent safety profile. The most common side effects include mild stinging or burning sensation at the site of instillation, eye redness, swollen eyes, blurred vision, eye discomfort, and dizziness. These effects are usually mild and transient, resolving within a few minutes. Other reported effects include temporary visual disturbances and a sensation of something in the eye. Uncommon side effects may include headache, sensitivity to light, swollen eyelids, eye pain, and changes in taste. If any side effect persists or worsens, the user should discontinue use and consult a doctor.
Serious but rare side effects include corneal inflammation, visual disturbances, increased intraocular pressure, and severe allergic reactions. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience severe eye pain, sudden vision changes, persistent redness or swelling, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Important precautions include not wearing contact lenses during use, as the preservative may be absorbed by soft contact lenses. If using other eye medications simultaneously, a gap of at least 5 to 10 minutes should be maintained between different drops. Patients should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until their vision is clear after application, as temporary blurred vision is possible. The product is not recommended for use in patients with a known hypersensitivity to potassium iodide, sodium chloride, calcium chloride, iodine, or any of the excipients. It should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women, and in children and adolescents below 18 years of age. The dropper tip should not be touched to the eye or any surface to maintain sterility. The product should not be used if the seal is broken or if the solution is discolored or contains precipitate.
The product should be stored below 25 degrees Celsius in a cool and dry place, protected from light, and kept out of reach of children. The bottle should be tightly closed after each use. The product is available in India at a price range of approximately 81 to 100 rupees per 10 ml bottle and is available through major online pharmacy platforms and offline pharmacies.
