Description
Introduction to Travatan Z:
Travatan Z is a prescription ophthalmic solution. The product shown is a 2.5 ml bottle of travoprost 40 micrograms/ml (0.004%) eye drops, presented alongside its characteristic blue-and-white gradient packaging box.
Travatan Z belongs to a class of medications called prostaglandin analogues, specifically a prostaglandin F2-alpha analogue. Its active ingredient, travoprost, works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor, the fluid inside the eye, thereby effectively reducing elevated intraocular pressure. This mechanism makes it a first-line treatment for conditions where excess eye pressure poses a risk to vision.
The primary indications for Travatan Z are the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It is approved for use in adults and children aged 16 years and older. In some regions, it is also indicated for pediatric patients aged 2 months to less than 18 years with ocular hypertension or pediatric glaucoma.
The recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening. The IOP-lowering effect begins approximately 2 hours after the first administration, with maximum effect reached after about 12 hours. It is important not to administer the drop more than once daily, as more frequent use may actually decrease the IOP-lowering effect. If a dose is missed, treatment should continue with the next scheduled dose.
The solution is a sterile, isotonic, buffered, preserved aqueous solution with a pH of approximately 5.7 and osmolality of about 290 mOsmol/kg. It uses the sofZia preservative system (boric acid, propylene glycol, sorbitol, zinc chloride), which has been shown to cause less ocular surface toxicity compared to traditional benzalkonium chloride preservatives.
Regarding common side effects, the most frequently reported is ocular hyperemia (eye redness), occurring in 30% to 50% of patients. Other common reactions include eye discomfort, foreign body sensation, eye pain, itching, blurred vision (usually transient after instillation), and dry eyes. A notable long-term effect is iris hyperpigmentation (darkening of the iris), which may be permanent and can cause a visible cosmetic difference between treated and untreated eyes. Eyelashes may also become longer, thicker, and darker over time, though this change is usually reversible upon discontinuation.
Side effects:
Serious but less common side effects include cataracts, conjunctivitis, corneal staining, keratitis, photophobia, and subconjunctival hemorrhage. Systemic effects are rare but have included headache, chest pain, bradycardia, and dyspepsia. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience severe eye pain, sudden vision loss, tunnel vision, halos around lights, or signs of a severe allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, facial swelling).
Precautions include removing contact lenses before instillation (wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting), not driving or operating machinery until vision clears after use, and informing the doctor about any concurrent eye medications (other drops should be administered at least 5 minutes apart). The drug is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical consultation. There are no known contraindications, but it should be avoided in patients with a known allergy to any of its components.
The product is available in a 2.5 ml DROP-TAINER bottle with a dropper tip, designed for easy and hygienic administration. In India, Travatan Z is available through major pharmacies and online platforms like 1mg, Apollo Pharmacy, and Practo, and is typically priced in the range of 250 to 400 rupees per bottle.
