Description

Rapidon OD Eye Drops is a sterile ophthalmic solution available in a 3 ml bottle. Each ml of the solution contains Olopatadine Hydrochloride 2 mg (0.2% w/v) as the active ingredient, along with Benzalkonium Chloride 0.01% w/v as a preservative and sterile aqueous vehicle. The product is strictly for external ophthalmic use only and must not be injected or ingested. It is a dual-action anti-allergic ophthalmic solution used for the treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. The product is packaged in a clean white box with a light blue horizontal band across the upper section containing the generic drug name, the brand name “Rapidon OD” printed in blue below the band, and a light blue wave-like graphic design at the bottom.

Olopatadine is a dual-action anti-allergic agent that functions as both a relatively selective histamine H1-receptor antagonist and an inhibitor of histamine release from mast cells. Its mechanism of action is based on two complementary pathways. First, as a mast cell stabilizer, olopatadine prevents the degranulation of mast cells in the conjunctiva, thereby inhibiting the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes, prostaglandins, and substance P that are responsible for the allergic cascade. Second, as a selective H1-receptor antagonist, it competitively blocks the action of any histamine that has already been released, preventing it from binding to H1 receptors on the conjunctival epithelial cells. This dual mechanism provides a more comprehensive and sustained anti-allergic effect compared to single-mechanism antihistamines. Additionally, olopatadine has been shown to inhibit eosinophil activation and reduce chemotaxis, further suppressing the inflammatory response. The result is rapid and prolonged relief from itching, redness, tearing, and swelling of the eyes caused by allergic reactions.

The primary indication for Rapidon OD Eye Drops is the treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis, both seasonal and perennial. It is effective in relieving symptoms such as redness, itching, watering, burning, and swelling of the eyes caused by exposure to common allergens including pollen, dust mites, ragweed, grass, animal hair, and pet dander. The 0.2% concentration allows for once-daily dosing, making it convenient for patients who need long-term management of allergic eye conditions. The product is approved for use in adults and children aged 2 years and older. It is not intended for treating bacterial, viral, or fungal eye infections.

The recommended dosage is 1 drop instilled into each affected eye once daily. The onset of action is rapid, with symptomatic relief from itching typically observed within 30 minutes of the first application. The duration of effect lasts up to 12 hours or more, which is why once-daily dosing is sufficient. The drops should be used at the same time each day for consistent protection. Once symptomatic improvement is established, the medication should be continued for as long as necessary to sustain improvement, particularly during peak allergen seasons. If a dose is missed, it should be instilled as soon as remembered, but if it is close to the time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped.

The most common side effects include eye pain, eye irritation, dry eye, abnormal sensation in the eyes, and eye discomfort. Other common side effects include headache, fatigue, dry nose, changes in taste (dysgeusia), and sleepiness. These effects are generally mild and transient, resolving within a few minutes to a few hours. Uncommon side effects may include blurred vision (usually temporary after instillation), eye inflammation or infection, sensitivity of the eye towards light (photophobia), increased tear production, eye itching or redness, eyelid abnormality, swelling or crusting of the eyelid, dizziness, runny nose, and dryness of the skin.

Serious but rare side effects include severe allergic reactions (swelling of the face, hives, difficulty breathing), and hypersensitivity reactions. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience severe eye pain, sudden vision changes, persistent redness or swelling, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Important precautions include removing soft contact lenses before instilling the drops and waiting at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the preservative benzalkonium chloride may be absorbed by soft contact lenses and cause discoloration. If using other eye medications simultaneously, a gap of at least 5 to 10 minutes should be maintained between different drops. Patients should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until their vision is clear after application, as temporary blurred vision is common. The product is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to olopatadine or any of the excipients. Benzalkonium chloride, the preservative, has been reported to cause punctate keratopathy and toxic ulcerative keratopathy with frequent or prolonged use, particularly in patients with dry eye, so close monitoring is required. The product is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but consultation with a doctor is recommended. The product should be used within 4 weeks (28 days) of opening the bottle. The dropper tip should not be touched to the eye or any surface to maintain sterility.

The product should be stored in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight and kept out of reach of children. The bottle should be tightly closed after each use. The product is available in India at a price range of approximately 100 to 200 rupees per 3 ml bottle and is available through major online pharmacy platforms and offline pharmacies with a valid prescription.
