Description

Redif Eye Drops is a sterile ophthalmic solution available in a 10 ml bottle. Each ml of the solution contains Naphazoline Hydrochloride 0.02% w/v, Zinc Sulphate 0.1% w/v, Boric Acid 1.8% w/v, and Sodium Chloride 0.85% w/v as the active ingredients, along with a preservative and sterile aqueous vehicle. The product is strictly for external ophthalmic use only and must not be injected or ingested. It is a multicomponent anti-allergic, astringent, and decongestant ophthalmic solution designed to provide rapid relief from eye redness, irritation, and discomfort. The product is packaged in a tall, narrow rectangular box with a gradient design transitioning from deep blue at the top to lighter blue and white at the bottom, with the brand name “Redif” displayed prominently in bold red font in the center.

Naphazoline Hydrochloride is an alpha-adrenergic agonist belonging to the imidazoline class of sympathomimetic drugs. Its mechanism of action is based on its ability to constrict (narrow) the dilated blood vessels in the conjunctiva (the white part of the eye). When the blood vessels in the eye become swollen and dilated due to minor irritants such as dust, smoke, wind, allergens, or swimming, the eye appears red. By stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors on the blood vessel walls, naphazoline causes vasoconstriction, which reduces the blood flow to the conjunctival vessels and thereby diminishes the appearance of redness. Zinc Sulphate acts as a mild astringent that helps clear mucus and discharge from the outer surface of the eye, often associated with exposure to pollen, dust, and smoke. It also has mild antiseptic properties that help prevent secondary bacterial growth on the ocular surface. Boric Acid acts as a mild antiseptic and buffering agent, helping to maintain the isotonicity of the solution and providing a soothing, cooling effect on the irritated ocular surface. It also has mild antibacterial and antifungal properties that help protect the eye from minor infections. Sodium Chloride maintains the isotonicity of the solution, ensuring it is compatible with the tear film and comfortable upon instillation. Together, these four agents provide a comprehensive approach to managing eye redness, irritation, and mild allergic symptoms.

The primary indications for Redif Eye Drops are the temporary relief of redness and discomfort due to minor eye irritations, the temporary relief of burning and irritation due to dryness of the eye, and the management of mild allergic eye conditions. It is useful in bringing rapid symptomatic relief to eyes affected with mild to moderate irritation caused by environmental factors such as dust, smoke, pollution, wind, swimming, or prolonged screen time. It is also indicated for the relief of minor eye discomfort associated with contact lens wear. The product is intended for occasional, short-term use only and is not meant for treating serious eye conditions, infections, or chronic diseases.

The recommended dosage is 1 to 2 drops instilled into the affected eye(s) up to 4 times a day, or as directed by a physician. The drops should be used only as needed for temporary relief. It is important to stop use and consult a doctor if the condition worsens or if the redness or irritation persists for more than 72 hours (3 days). The product should not be used for more than 4 days without medical supervision, as prolonged or excessive use of vasoconstrictor eye drops can cause rebound congestion, where the eye blood vessels swell even more once the medicine wears off, making the eyes appear redder than before.

The most common side effects include temporary burning or stinging sensation in the eye immediately after application, blurred vision, eye redness, itching, and discomfort. Other common side effects include enlarged (dilated) pupils, headache, and dizziness. These effects are generally mild and transient, resolving within a few minutes to a few hours. Uncommon side effects may include increased sensitivity to light, changes in vision, eye pain, dryness of the eye, and mild allergic reactions such as itching or swelling of the eyelids.

Serious but rare side effects include severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing), increased intraocular pressure, and systemic sympathomimetic effects (palpitations, tremors, profuse sweating, weakness, nervousness). Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience severe eye pain, sudden vision changes, persistent redness or swelling, chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Important precautions include not wearing contact lenses during use, as the vasoconstrictor component may cause dryness that can damage the lenses. If using other eye medications simultaneously, a gap of at least 5 to 10 minutes should be maintained between different drops. Patients should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until their vision is clear after application, as temporary blurred vision is common. The product should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients. It should be used with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, high blood pressure, heart disease, or overactive thyroid gland. The product is not recommended for use in children below 6 years of age without medical supervision. The dropper tip should not be touched to the eye or any surface to maintain sterility. The product should not be used if the solution changes color or becomes cloudy.

The product should be stored in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight and kept out of reach of children. The bottle should be tightly closed after each use. The product is available in India at a price of approximately 57 to 67 rupees per 10 ml bottle and is available through major online pharmacy platforms and offline pharmacies with a valid prescription.
