Description
Introduction Travosun Eye Drops:
Travosun Eye Drops is a prescription ophthalmic solution available in a 3 ml bottle. Each ml of the solution contains Travoprost IP 40 mcg (0.004% w/v) as the active ingredient, along with Benzalkonium Chloride Solution (0.02% w/v) as a preservative and Water for Injection IP as the vehicle. The product is strictly for external ophthalmic use only and must not be injected or ingested.
Travoprost is a synthetic prostaglandin F2-alpha analogue. It works by stimulating prostaglandin receptors in the ciliary body and uveoscleral tissues of the eye, which increases the outflow of aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye). This enhanced drainage effectively lowers the elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) that characterizes conditions like open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. By reducing this pressure, the medication helps prevent progressive damage to the optic nerve and subsequent vision loss.
The primary indications for Travosun Eye Drops are the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is particularly useful in patients who are intolerant of other intraocular pressure-lowering medications or who have not responded adequately to them. The medication is approved for use in adults. Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established.
The recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening. The IOP-lowering effect begins within approximately 2 hours after the first instillation and reaches its maximum effect at around 12 hours. It is important to use the drops consistently at the same time each day. More frequent use than once daily should be avoided as it may reduce the effectiveness of the medication. If a dose is missed, the patient should continue with the next scheduled dose and should not double up.
The most common side effect is ocular hyperemia (eye redness), reported in 35 to 50% of patients in clinical studies. Approximately 3% of patients discontinued therapy due to conjunctival hyperemia. Other common side effects (occurring in 5 to 10% of patients) include decreased visual acuity, eye discomfort, foreign body sensation, eye pain, and eye itching. A notable long-term effect is iris hyperpigmentation (darkening of the iris color), which may be permanent and can create a visible difference between treated and untreated eyes. Eyelashes may also become longer, thicker, and darker over time, though this change is generally reversible upon stopping the medication.
Uncommon side effects (1 to 4% incidence) include abnormal vision, blepharitis, blurred vision, cataract, conjunctivitis, dry eye, keratitis, lid margin crusting, photophobia, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and tearing. Systemic effects are rare but may include headache, irregular heartbeat, cough, stuffy nose, throat irritation, darkening of skin around the eye, and changes in hair texture or growth.
Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience severe eye redness, swelling, or pain; breathing trouble, wheezing, or chest tightness; slow or irregular heartbeat; or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
Important precautions include removing contact lenses before instilling the drops and waiting at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. If using other eye medications, a gap of at least 5 to 10 minutes should be maintained between different drops. Patients should avoid driving or operating machinery until their vision is clear after use, as transient blurred vision is common. The product should be stored in a cool, dark place below 30 degrees Celsius. The medicine should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding without consulting a doctor. The box carries a doctor’s instruction field for marking left or right eye usage.
The product is available in India at a price range of approximately 175 to 200 rupees per 3 ml bottle and is available through major online pharmacy platforms and offline pharmacies with a valid prescription.
